Learning and Development Managers from a wide range of organisations across the social services sector met on 9 March to discuss the challenges of change facing the sector and the role of learning and development in supporting staff to deal with the changes effectively.

Shared services, reablement and succession planning were top of the agenda. Participants acknowledged the importance and value of coming together as a professional group to share and learn from each other. A key outcome from the day was a plan to influence how continued sharing might be facilitated beyond April 2011. Continuous Learning Framework (Fri 21 Jan 2011) posted by Isobel Ovens.

The Continuous Learning Framework (CLF) aims to improve outcomes for people using social services by supporting the workforce delivering them to be the best they can be. The CLF highlights the shared responsibility of social service workers and their employers for the continuous learning and development of the workforce which is already set out on the Codes of Practice. For more information and to download a copy of the CLF please visit www.continuouslearningframework.com

The Organisational Capabilities Tool - The CLF has six organisational capabilities. Their purpose is to support social service employers to create the culture and conditions in the workplace that enable social service workers to learn, develop and improve their practice throughout their careers. This interactive audit tool has been developed by the Scottish Social Services Council to help social service employers to audit their performance against the organisational capabilities of the Continuous Learning Framework and generate an action plan for further development.  http://workforcesolutions.sssc.uk.com/course/view.php?id=29

Coaching and Mentoring Workshop 27 October (Tue 9 Nov 2010)

Thirty seven people joined a small team of facilitators for the chance to learn more about mentoring, coaching and how they can be used to support continuous improvement.

Participants came from large and small organisations and ranged from front-line workers to senior managers and independent advisers. All agreed that the day offered them something towards improving their understanding of what this is all about, why it is worth considering and what they need to do next.

The next step for the Tayforth Learning Network is to provide support to those who have asked for it and to go into more detail about the practicalities of, for example, training mentors and coaches, setting up in-house programmes, building networks across organisations etc.

Information from the day is available below.

Administrators Workshop, 25th February 2010 (Fri 26 Mar 2010) posted by Anne Tavendale.

During the Tayforth Workforce Planning Project 2008/09, it became apparent that many organisations recognized the critical role that administration processes have in contributing to effective workforce planning. The workshop attracted over 40 administration workers and managers who have responsibility for workforce planning processes and was a first for Tayforth in reaching out to this crucial part of the workforce. The workshop explored opportunities to:

  • share examples of good practice
  • explore the administration role and competencies required for effective performance
  • identify administration workers learning needs and the options available to meet them.
